12 Things you can do to Reduce your chance of Cancer
National Nutrition Month
Should I go Paleo?
Should I go Paleo?
Raw? Gluten-free? 8-hr diet? Organic? GMO free? Vegan? So many choices…who is right?
Do we eat too many refined carbohydrates as a population? Yes.
Are the additives, packaging and GMOs causing disruptions to our genetics? Uh huh.
Are pesticides and poor soil quality affecting our produce? Duh.
Is animal cruelty a part of most meat/dairy distribution? Sadly, yes.
There is no one right way to eat, because there are so many issues with our bodies and our food supply. We are all individuals with unique genetics (some of which cause food allergies and intolerances), distinct passions (animal rights, human rights), and unique talents (cooking, gardening, athletics) that will dictate what foods we choose to put into our bodies. What is best for your body may not be what is best for your neighbor.
Whatever way of eating you choose, eat with sensibility and compassion. By sensibility, I mean moderate portions and variety of nutrient sources. By compassion, I mean think about how the food you purchased got to you (did it come from a company that widely used pesticides or GMOs, traveled across the world and left a large carbon footprint)? Animal rights is a huge part of compassion, follow your heart with however you feel lead.
We can all eat better. In turn, we can help our bodies, our animals, and our earth.
April, what do you think about a paleo diet?
The Birth of Vivian Rose
The much anticipated, much dreamed about, much talked about…has finally happened.
The Birth of Vivian Rose, my first Grandchild!
This is Vivian one hour old, she weighed 7lbs and is 19 1/2 long. She is Grand ma ma’s perfect little princess!
A few months ago I posted a story and ultrasound picture of her. I thought she was already adorable at only a few weeks old. Grand ma ma went a little crazy buying things as soon as she knew for sure her first grand child was going to be a girl.
I bought a chandelier for Vivian’s bedroom…Grandma ma doesn’t even have a chandelier in her bedroom…at least not yet!
I’m so proud of my daughter April, she had a 100% natural birth just like I did, NO meds of any kind. I was shocked to know that things have changed so much in the past 20 years or so. Back in my day we did everything we could not to take any drugs of any kind, now everyone tries to talk you into taking medications for the pain, it’s even hard to find a doctor that still believe’s in a natural birth. April’s doctor still believe’s in natural births but said he has delivered only 4 babies natural (that is without drugs) in the past year.
April’s birth plan is very rare indeed!
This picture was taken 6 hours before April went into Labor.
24 hours later……
What we lovingly called the ”baby dance”.
When April had a contraction she would lean into her husband Chad and sway from side to side till the pain was gone.
Vivian was born, Sunday December 4th at 8:28 pm
after approximately 24 hours of labor.
This is what a baby born without drugs looks like.
Wide awake, and taking in her new world!
I hope anyone reading this who is pregnant, or knows anyone who is pregnant, Please consider giving birth without drugs. Don’t let your doctor or nurses try to talk you out of it, women have been giving birth for thousands of years without drugs. Yes, giving birth is painful, but it can be done without drugs!
XOXO,
Grand ma ma
I have a Brain Itch…
I have a problem with sleeping at night, and I have had this problem for quite a while now. The problem is…I can’t sleep because songs get stuck in my brain.
One of the terms for this condition is called Brain Itch…the other name is…Earworms…YUCK!
The good news is 90% of us have had this happen to us at one time or another. At first I thought it was nice to wake up singing a song every morning, but over the years it has become a roadblock to being able to get a good nights sleep.
And in my never ending desire to be as as healthy as possible I did some investigation into the earworm/brain itch problem. This what I found out.
Mainly Women have this problem……(Great I can’t do anything about that!)
Next comes musicians…duh!…( that makes sense.)
Then comes people who are stressed….or tired…yep that’s me…or neurotic…
(OMG! do I need to worry about this too!)
Researchers aren’t sure why this happens. But they think it has something to do with our auditory cortex.
For some reason a song gets stuck in our brains that causes a cognitive itch or a brain itch. The brain has a need to fill in the gaps in a song’s rhythm. In other words…the brain kept singing the song long after the song had ended.
Then our brains like to scratch the itch by repeating the song over and over again until it is stuck in a unending cycle. The old….. the more you scratch the more you itch problem.
Some researchers think that songs are like thoughts that we are trying to suppress. The harder we try not to think about them, the more we think about it.
Others think that it just the brains way to keep it’s self busy when in idle mode.
Now that I understand the problem….. how do you get rid of it?
The bad news is, there is no simple way of getting rid of the problem…..
( Great!… not what I wanted to hear.)
Once a song gets stuck in your head it might be there for a few hours or a few days…(I personally have an Adele song that has been running almost non stop for about a week now)…
There are a few things you can try to stop the insanity.
1. Sing another song. ( I need to do this, because I’m really getting tired of what is playing in my brain right now!)
2. Switch to something that keeps you busy like working out. ( But I need to listen to music when I work out, how is that going to help?)
3 Make sure you listen to a song all the way through. ( this drove Mozart crazy, people would tease him by playing a song half way and then stopping. Mozart would come running into the room and finish the song)
4. Turn off the music. (easier said, then done)
5. Share the song with a someone. ( And then laugh like hell.. to yourself when you hear them humming the tune.)
6. Imagine the earworm crawling out of your head and then stomping on it!
I’m sure there are many more cures than this. I would like to know if anyone out there has a found something that works for them for their brain itch/ earworm problem.
But for now I will leave you with a few songs that have driven me crazy…. I think number one for most people is
…..It’s a small world after all…it’s a small world after all….it’s a small world after all…it’s a small..small…world…..
Number two that drives me crazy is….Stop…Stop…Stop all the music…give me time to breath….Stop… Stop… Stop all the music or I’ll have to leave……Maybe this is the name I should have entitled this post…it does say it all….
XOXO
Janice
Janice,,,In the stye,,, with Diamonds
The other day my right eye started bothering me. My first thought for my eye pain was because some of the Brazilian blow out solution got into my eye when I was at the hair salon getting my hair de-frizzed. I rubbed my eye while I was at the salon and mascara was all over my face, so in doing this I might have given myself a stye? What ever!
The point of this story is an old family cure for styes.
My mother taught me to rub a stye with a sanitized diamond. Has anyone else ever heard of this treatment or tried it?
I went to my eye doctor to see what the official doctor treatment would be and he said hot compresses 3 to 6 times a day. This sounded a little too busy to me, so I opted for the diamond treatment.
Diamonds are a girls best friend right?
So out came my one of my diamonds, from my vast selection of Jewels (just kidding). I cleaned it first and then rubbed the stye for a few seconds. I did the diamond treatment twice that day, and low and behold the next day the stye was almost gone.
I told my boyfriend my story about the family history of using diamonds on styes, he laughed and said ”yeah right, you just want more diamonds“! Yes, I said ” It’s a wise idea to always wear one in case of an emergency situation like a stye in your eye”. Wink… wink!
I went back to my eye doctor today to pick up my new sunglasses and while I was there I told him my stye was gone. I mentioned the family cure for styes by using diamonds, he looked at me with a sly smile and said he had never heard of such a thing. But you know what? I bet he will try it for himself when ever the next stye opportunity comes around.
Now i’m singing the Beatles song…( Lucy in the sky with diamonds) with my own little twist to it…..Janice in the stye with diamonds…. Catchy little diddy, isn’t it?
XOXO
